1. System requirements

Before being able to use Viewtalk, you'll need a few things:

  • Modern web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Opera)
  • A webcam
  • A microphone (if your webcam doesn't have one built-in) or a headset
  • Adobe Flash Player 10 or higher

Adobe Flash Player 10 is available to most operating systems including: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Apple OS X, Linux. It can be downloaded from the Adobe website: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

2. I can't see a picture in my webcam screen?

Make sure your webcam is installed correctly, plugged in to your computer and working with the software it came with (you may need to download a driver for your webcam from the manufacture company's website).

If this doesn't work make sure your webcam isn't being used by another application or website.

If you get a green screen or if the screen is showing digital interference, unplug the webcam from your computer and then plug it back in. This can reset the picture, particularly with Macs.

Finally, restarting your computer usually fixes most problems!

3. What do I do with the Adobe Flash Settings dialogue box that comes up over my video screen?

If you have a USB webcam/camera follow these steps:

  • Click the Allow button in the dialogue box
  • If still cannot see your picture right click (on a PC) or hold the Control key down on your keyboard and click (for Mac) in the middle of the ViewtalkViewtalk player screen
  • Select the Settings option from the menu that appears
  • Click the webcam tab (far right hand side of the tabs in the bottom row)
  • Using the drop down menu select USB Video Class Video from the list
  • Click the close button and your webcam should be connected.

If you still can't see a picture having followed the above steps, it may be that you are using a DV webcam/camera or a Firewire webcam/camera:

  • Right click (on a PC) or hold the Control key down on your keyboard and click (for Mac) in the middle of the Viewtalk player screen
  • Select the Settings option from the menu that appears
  • Click the webcam tab (far right hand side of the tabs in the bottom row)
  • Using the drop down menu select DV Video or IIDC Firewire Video from the list
  • Click the close button and your webcam sViewtalkhould be connected

It is possible to use a DV camera as a webcam with Windows XP but a third-party plug-in is required. For further details please see: http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/webcamdv.html

4. How do I stop the Adobe Flash Settings dialogue box from coming up on my video area everytime I use Viewtalk?

Check the Remember box on the first screen of the Adobe Flash Settings dialogue box. You will see this under the Allow selection button.

If this doesn''t appear automatically right click (on a PC) or hold the Control key down on your keyboard and click (for Mac) in the middle of the Viewtalk player screen.

Select the Settings option from the menu that appears.

Click the privacy tab (second from the left of the tabs in the bottom row).

5. Having problems viewing Flash video through a Firewall?

You may have Firewall software or hardware that will block video. Some personal Firewalls will ask you if you want to allow the Flash Player to access the Internet, answer yes if it does this. If it does not ask you and you don't see any video, check the documentation that came with your Firewall (or the manufacturers website) to see how to configure your Firewall in order to see Flash video - you will need to open port 1935.

Some corporate networks and Internet Service Providers block video transmissions by use of a Firewall. If you cannot see video (even though your system meets the system requirements, see 1. System requirements), you may want to contact your Internet Service Provider or network administrator to see whether a security firewall is blocking video transmission."&"

6. How can I improve the quality of my webcam image?

Lighting yourself correctly can make a big difference to image quality.

Try placing the camera at different heights until you find the best angle.

If there is a bright light or a window behind you it will make you look dim so try to light your face using a desk lamp; a lower wattage bulb will give a softer effect. Alternatively place a large white piece of paper by your keyboard and bounce the light off it. If the camera can see something white (like some clothing) your computer will balance the colours more accurately. If you are outdoors do try a few different locations. Try sitting in the shade with the sun in front of you - and try bouncing light off a white sheet or piece of paper.

A good quality webcam will also help. We recommend Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 or any of the Creative Optia LIVE! Cam range.

You will also receive a video message from the site when you register which demonstrates some methods of looking good on camera.

7. What is a video message?

A video message allows you to record a video and send this to your friends and family, or to publish this on Viewtalk blogs or walls.

8. How do I record a video message?

Once you have signed up for a Viewtalk account and are logged in you will be able to start recording video messages.

When you are logged in click the Videos tab. On the top right of the screen click on the Record Video button.

This will take you to the recording screen, showing you the webcam screen (if you have problems with this please see 1. System requirements, 2. I can't see a picture in my webcam screen?, 3. What do I do with the Adobe Flash Settings dialogue box that comes up over my video screen? and 5. Having problems viewing Flash video through a Firewall?).

Position yourself in the webcam screen so that you are ready to start the recording. When you are ready click on the Record button. Click the Stop button to finish recording. You can preview your video message by clicking the Play button.

If you decide that you need to rerecord your video message click the Clear button and start the recording again.

When you are happy with your video message you can add some text to the title and description fields.

There are a number of other options available on the recording screen. You might wish to record an audio only message if you are at a computer without a webcam. Select Audio Only on the screen if you want to use this facility. The recording method is identical to recording a video message.

Either click the Save button, so your video message will now be saved for later use, or click the Send button to share with a contact immediately (see 25. How do I add a new contact to my contact list?). In both cases your video recording will be saved and can be found in your Recorded folder.

How do I send a video message?

There are multiple ways to send a message. You can send a video message directly from the recording screen (see 8. How do I record a video message?). You could also click on the Videos tab and locate the video you wish to send and then click on the envelope icon next to the video message or the Send button beneath the player screen.

You will now see the Send Message window. Your video will have been added to the message. Another alternative is to click the Send a video button in the top right of the screen. You will then have to add a video(s) to the message by clicking Go to Videos button. Click on the envelope icon next to the video(s) you wish to send to add them to your message.

Click Go to Contacts button and select a contact from your contact list (see 25. How do I add a new contact to my contact list?), type in a valid email address and click add.

If you are sending multiple videos or you wish to add some text to your video message, click the Add Description button, where you will be able to add a title and description to your message. Once your message is complete, click the Back button to return to the send a message page. Click Send.

Contacts who are already in your contact list will receive your video message almost immediately in their Viewtalk account (as well as receiving a notification email).

Contacts who have been invited but who have not yet set up a Viewtalk account will receive an email inviting them to view your video message.

10. How do I import a video?

Click the videos tab and then click on the Import Video button at the top of the screen.

Click the Browse button on the page and a dialogue box will open. Browse to the location on your computer where the video is saved.

Most video formats are supported including MPEG, AVI, Quicktime, WMV, MP4 and 3GP. Maximum file size is 100MB.

Once you have selected your video to import, give it a title and a description if you wish into the description box, then click the Import button in the grey panel at the bottom.

This will start the upload process, this may take some time, depending on how big the video file is and also how fast your Internet connection is.

Once your video is uploaded it will appear in the Recorded video list. It may take anything up to 5 minutes before you can see the proper preview image, but don't worry, this will appear as soon as it can load onto our servers.

11. Which devices can I use to import video to Viewtalk?

Firstly you will need to save the data from your device to your computer hard drive before uploading to Viewtalk.

If you have any devices which allow you to save video footage to your computer you can then import this to Viewtalk. You can record video on most modern mobile telephones and still cameras. Alternatively you may have a video camera that you can use to record footage.

12. How do I export a video?

When you have a video selected, the details will appear on the right of your screen, beneath this is the Export button. Click this to go to a screen that will allow you to save this video to your computer by clicking the Export button.

You can also copy and paste the code in the text field below the export video thumbnail display to embed the video on other websites or blogs, or MySpace.

You will also see Embed this Link buttons for each video on Walls and Blogs. 17. How do I remove a video from a folder?

Click on the folder you wish to alter and click the button Edit folder directly beneath the list. In the far right column on the screen you will see Remove buttons next to each, click this button to remove videos from this folder. Click the Save button below once finished. The videos contained within the folder will not be deleted and will remain in the relevant storage filter (i.e. Today, Last 7 Days, Older, Recorded). Do not click Edit List or Delete beneath the video: this will permanently delete the videofrom your account (see 13. How do I delete a video?).

A prompt will then appear and ask you again if you wish to delete the folder, click yes if you are sure you wish to delete and click cancel if you decide not to delete the folder. The videos contained within the folder will not be deleted and will remain in the relevant storage filter (i.e. Today, Last 7 Days, Older, Recorded).

19. How do I start a Live video chat session?

Click the Live tab at the top of your screen.

You will see a list of all of your contacts; those who are online and available to chat will have a green icon next to their name (this will be a grey icon if they are offline).

Click the telephone icon to the right of the contact you wish to chat with to add them to your Live session.

You may see a grey video container before the contact accepts your invitation to talk. This means that the contact you wish to chat with is receiving a notification alert screen and a notification ringing alert sound, telling them that you are requesting a chat with them.

If they decide to accept the chat request, they can click the OK button on the notification alert screen and this will bring your webcam image into the video container on the right of the screen.

When they have accepted you will appear in the video container on the right of the screen. Click talk and hold this down while you are speaking and you will see yourself in the video container and the contact you are talking to will also see you in the video container. When your contact wishes to talk to you, you will see them in the video container and they will also see themselves.

There are two methods of talking to your contacts: either click and hold down the talk button (push mode, as default) or click the tab next to the talk button to click to talk and click to stop talking (hold mode).

When finished, click Hang Up button below the video container.

If the contact you wish to chat with is not online, you can always send them a video message.

Click the Live tab at the top of your screen and you will see a list of contacts. Click the telephone icon to the right of the contact(s) you wish to chat with to add them to your Live session.

With multiple people in the Live session you may wish to interject in the conversation. If so, click the Request to Talk button below the video container. This will allow you to be next in line to talk.

21. How do I record a Live session?

If you started the video chat you have the option to record. Click on the Record button below the video. Click on the Stop button to finish recording your chat.

You can now add some text to the title and description fields and then click the Save button. Please note that when you are recording a chat session and you click the Save button this will automatically end the Live session.

Your chat recording will now be saved in your list of Recorded videos, and is available to send to your contacts.

22. My Live session is looking slow and choppy

When you are chatting with a contact, your Internet connection speed (as well as your contacts) will impact your video quality.

Disconnecting from the chat session and retrying your call can reset your picture quality. The type of Internet Connection you are using will make a difference here - you will need to be using a Broadband line in order to use any video messaging software properly.

It will also make a bit of a difference whether you live in a city, a town or in the countryside because, generally the speed of Broadband can depend on the actual physical length of the line.

23. I keep hearing an echo when talking

This is not an issue with your set-up. Either you or your contact is using an open microphone. Ask your contact to turn down their speaker volume or adjust the microphone settings. If this doesn't help, check your own settings.

24. Other people hear an echo when talking to you

We recommend using a headset, headphones or a USB speakerphone.

You can reduce echo in the Adobe Flash Player settings. Right click (on a PC) or hold the Control key down on your keyboard and click (for Mac) in the middle of the Viewtalk player screen. Select the Settings option from the menu that appears. Click the audio tab (second from the right of the tabs in the bottom row). Check the Reduce Echo box.

They will receive an email with a link to the Viewtalk website, from where they can register to see your video message and become part of your network.

When you click the Import Contacts button you can import contacts from webmail systems (Windows Live, Gmail and Yahoo are currently supported). You need to separate the key words or phrases with commas.

Viewtalk video blogs are a great way to keep an online diary, travelogue, videos of your hobbies or interests, or even instructional videos.

44. How do I start a Viewtalk video wall?

You are able to set up as many different walls as you like with your Viewtalk account. To get started click on the Walls tab at the top of the screen and then click Start Video Walls button in the bottom right hand corner.

Give your wall a title and description. You can then decide to create a wall that is either private or public.

A public wall will have a unique url and anyone will be able to view this wall and post a video to a wall. This is the perfect platform for creating public debate or public contributions about certain subjects. For example if you had an interest in Greek cookery you might like to record your recipe for your favourite dish and then publicise the link to your friends asking them to contribute using video or text.

You may prefer to create a private wall where only selected people are able to view the content on the wall and able to post video and text contributions. You are only able to allow those in your Contacts list who are registered users access to your private wall (see 25. How do I add a new contact to my contact list?). To allow people access to your private wall click the Invite Contacts button and your contact list will appear. Click the icon to the right of the name of the Contact you wish to allow access to. These contacts will see the wall they have been invited to in their Viewtalk account. They will not be able to edit the settings on the Wall and will only be allowed to add or remove their own content. Private walls will not appear on our wall search facility (see 55. How do I find other people's blogs or walls?) and will not be visible on your user page. These private walls are ideal for documenting family events, such as weddings.
